If you are a SURS-covered faculty or staff member, you may want to be aware of a provision of Public Act 99-0897, which became effective on January 1, 2017. Within this Act, SURS implemented a deadline for receiving information that SURS requests in the course of processing a benefit.
Is SURS asking for information? Respond within 90 days to avoid delays!
SURS requires participants, beneficiaries, and annuitants to provide any information that SURS requests as “necessary for the calculation, payment, or finalization of any benefit” within a 90 calendar day timeframe. If SURS does not receive the requested information in this timeframe, then SURS may “immediately cease processing the benefit and may not pay any additional benefit payment to the participant, beneficiary, or annuitant until the requested information is provided.”
SURS benefits may include:
- Death
- Retirement
- Disability
- Survivor Benefit
- Service Credit and Refunds
In order to prevent any delay in processing a benefit, you or your beneficiary should respond to SURS with the information they request as soon as possible within the 90 day timeframe.
