A new study may shed light on the unique coating on the skin of leafhoppers—and could ultimately inspire designers to come up with useful new materials. Leafhoppers are covered with hollow, soccer ball–shaped nanoparticles made from proteins and lipids. These “brochosomes,” help make the insects’ skin repel water and keep it from reflecting light.
