Join the Office of Health Improvement – Division of Emerging Health Issues at the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). This intern will support data-related partnership and community engagement efforts by collecting, organizing, and summarizing public health data that informs collaborative projects. They will assist in preparing data-driven briefs, meeting materials, and tracking partnership activities.
Under supervisory direction, the intern will conduct a comprehensive review of current and potential data-related partnerships to identify gaps and opportunities. They will help distribute targeted inquiries to gather partner input and draft a narrative report outlining recommended strategies for the upcoming grant year. Additional responsibilities may include supporting outreach to new and under-engaged partners and collecting feedback on tools, resources, and collaboration opportunities that can strengthen prevention efforts.
This role provides hands-on experience in public health partnership development, cross-sector collaboration, partnership evaluation, and applied report writing.
Responsibilities:
- Support evaluation efforts by helping analyze partner feedback, community needs, and project outcomes.
- Assist in tracking partnership activities by updating databases, monitoring engagement metrics, and compiling progress reports.
- Complete cumulative review of existing and prospective partnerships and assess remaining gaps or opportunities for improvement to be addressed in future grant years.
- Issue targeted inquiry, sent via available listservs, to solicit input and feedback on identified gaps or opportunities for partnership improvements.
- Draft narrative report to summarize recommended strategies and activities to be undertaken in the next grant year to continue fostering improvements in violence and injury data-related partnerships.
Optional Additional Responsibilities:
- Support outreach to prospective partners and existing partners with limited engagement to strengthen collaboration and participation.
- Gather feedback on the types of resources, tools, and collaboration opportunities that would be most beneficial in helping partners strengthen their efforts in violence and injury prevention.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program and in good academic standing, pursuing a degree in Public Health (MPH), Health Communications, Health Systems Evaluation, Public Administration (MPA), Social Work, or a related field.
- Ability to work remotely and maintain regular communication with the supervising team.
- Secure home internet access, a hotspot, or VPN.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to interpret and clearly summarize public health data, including trends, indicators, and descriptive statistics, supported by proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and familiarity with data and graphic design tools (e.g., Canva).
- Foundational coursework in public health, statistics, or research methods preferred.
- Ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative information, including identifying key themes, gaps, patterns, and emerging issues from data and documents.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured reports, briefs, and other professional written materials.
- Strong organizational skills, including tracking partnership activities, managing datasets, and maintaining accurate records.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when working with data, reports, and partner communications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners, including gathering input and incorporating stakeholder feedback into recommendations.
- Ability to translate stakeholder feedback into actionable insights and support development of recommendations.
- Basic experience with databases or data tracking systems for project or partnership management (preferred).
Duration and Compensation:
This internship is for the summer and fall 2026 semesters (with flexible start and end dates depending on your academic schedule) and will require approximately 10-15 hours per week.
This is an unpaid internship, but academic credit may be available depending on your institution’s policies and guidelines – please check with your academic advisor.
