Overview:
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated intern to support efforts in conducting a community needs assessment in rural counties, focusing on asthma-related needs such as education and health care access. This internship will provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health initiatives, community outreach, and health systems coordination.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize the most recent asthma surveillance data to identify rural counties with the greatest disparities.
- Conduct a community needs assessment among rural communities. Partners may include, but are not limited to, local health departments, critical access hospitals, and other health systems.
- Collaborate with partners, such as the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN) and Illinois Primary Health Care Association (IPHCA), to assist in outreach and support efforts.
- Based on assessment findings, create an action plan detailing key educational messages, clinical messages, target audience, and ideas for programmatic interventions.
- Communicate findings of the needs assessment and action plan to stakeholders, which may include, but are not limited to, the Illinois Asthma Partnership (IAP), ICAHN, and IPHCA.
- Participate in Asthma Program and evaluation team meetings to support program and evaluation activities.
- Participate in IAP meetings and assist with meeting organization and material preparation.
- Attend health-related conferences, workshops, and summits to stay updated on public health trends.
- Additional activities may include, but are not limited to, creation of surveillance reports and further analysis of asthma outcomes by geography, and asthma partnership evaluation activities or case studies.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Public Health.
- Knowledge of statewide asthma policies.
- Knowledge of National Asthma Education and Prevention Program guidelines.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work approximately 8-10 hours a week.
- Clinical knowledge of asthma exacerbations and factors that may lead to asthma emergency department visits and hospitalizations, including ICD-10 coding (preferred but not required).
- Previous experience in community outreach, event coordination, or public health programs (preferred but not required).

Duration and Compensation:
This is a summer internship that will begin in May and conclude in August. This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines. This is a remote opportunity for 8-10 hours a week.
