Join our team at the Director's Office and Bureau of Medical Services with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to support the development of a comprehensive global health risk analysis system. In this role, the intern will help strengthen situational awareness and inform public health planning by collecting, synthesizing, and interpreting international epidemiologic data. Working alongside program staff, the intern will analyze and evaluate data sources and co-create a usable risk analysis tool.
This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to support science-based risk assessment and international public health strategy. The intern’s work will help identify the strengths and limitations of existing data sources and support the creation of a pilot risk analysis process. Through this experience, the intern will gain practical exposure to global health monitoring, data visualization, and the development of frameworks used to protect public health at a systemic level.
Responsibilities:
- Support the development of a comprehensive global health risk analysis system by collecting, synthesizing, and interpreting international epidemiologic data.
- Assist in creating analytical frameworks, visualizations, and decision-support tools that strengthen situational awareness and inform public health planning.
- Work with IDPH staff to create a pilot risk analysis process.
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the global health risk analysis project.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled (and in good academic standing) as a graduate level student studying public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, social work, global health, or other related fields.
- Secure home internet access, a hotspot, or VPN for remote work.
- Availability to commit to 10–15 hours per week (flexible) during the Summer 2026 semester.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in Excel.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex data sources and risk assessment tools.
- Research skills, including literature reviews and evaluation of data sources for quality and relevance.
- Capacity to organize, manage, and synthesize information from varied global sources with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to translate international health data into clear visualizations and frameworks.
- Experience or knowledge in global health, biostatistics, or public health research is strongly desired.
- Experience with or working knowledge of R and/or Tableau is preferred but not required.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and incorporate feedback into project development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting data relevance and pilot processes.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting project deadlines.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid remote internship and will require 10–15 hours per week (flexible schedule). Academic credit may be available depending on your institution’s policies and guidelines - please check with your academic advisor.
