Data Systems and Community Health Indicators Summer 2024 Internship
Are you passionate about leveraging data to drive public health initiatives? Join us for an exciting internship opportunity with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to contribute to the enhancement of our data systems and the visualization of key community health indicators. The primary objective of this internship is to assist in preparing data files for our data systems and computing vital health indicators. As an intern, you will play a pivotal role in data acquisition, analysis, and visualization, contributing directly to public health efforts in Illinois.
Responsibilities:
1. Data Acquisition and Analysis: Gather data from various internal and external sources to compile comprehensive datasets. Perform analyses to identify trends, patterns, and insights relevant to community health indicators.
2. Data Visualization: Utilize tools such as Tableau, ARC GIS, or programming languages to create engaging and informative visualizations of health data. Translate complex data into easily understandable graphs, charts, and maps.
3. Community Health Indicators: Focus on a diverse range of health indicators, including demographic characteristics, access to care, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, infectious diseases, environmental factors, occupational health, injury control, and sentinel events.
4. IQUERY System Enhancement: Explore opportunities to upgrade and improve the functionality of the IQUERY online data system. Participate in discussions and contribute ideas for the design of a potential replacement system.
5. Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of experts, including data analysts, demographers, programmers, information technologists, and public service administrators. Engage in collaborative efforts to update and maintain the IQUERY system.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a graduate level program (data science, data analytics, statistics, computer science, management Information system focus preferred)
- Proficiency in data acquisition, analysis, and visualization techniques.
- Experience with tools such as Tableau, ARC GIS, or programming languages (e.g., Python, R) is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets.
- Knowledge of public health concepts and familiarity with community health indicators is a plus.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate date academic commitments. The internship will be part time, for approximately 5-10 hours per week and will start at the end of May or beginning of June. This is a remote position. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines. Applications due by March 22, 2024.
