Join our team in the Health Data and Policy division at the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to support the completion of the 2026 Disability and Disability-Free Life Expectancy Report. In this role, the intern will work closely with a State Demographer to finalize the 2026 Disability and Disability-Free Life Expectancy Report.
This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to contribute to meaningful public health research and data analysis that informs policy and health initiatives across the state. The project will build upon previously initiated work, enabling the intern to contribute to the completion of a final report by the conclusion of the internship.
Through this experience, the intern will gain practical exposure to data analysis, scientific communication, report writing, and demographic research, while contributing to a finalized public health report that highlights key health disparities affecting Illinois communities.
Responsibilities:
- Use R programming software to compile, tabulate, and analyze American Community Survey (ACS) data.
- Assist in organizing and documenting code to ensure reproducibility and transparency of data analysis.
- Produce tables, charts, and graphics that clearly illustrate report findings.
- Draft written descriptions explaining the figures and analytical results.
- Assist in writing an executive summary outlining key findings from the analysis.
- Support formatting and organization of the report, including figure numbering, section titles, table of contents, and references.
- Collaborate with the supervising demographer to ensure the report is completed efficiently and accurately.
- Review and edit completed report sections to ensure clarity, consistency, and accessibility for public health audiences.
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the project.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in a quantitative field such as sociology, psychology, geography, economics, public health, policy, demography, biological sciences, or related discipline.
- Experience using R for data analysis.
- Ability to work remotely and maintain regular communication with the supervising team.
- Secure home internet access, a hotspot, or VPN.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to analyze large datasets and interpret quantitative findings.
- Preferred knowledge in health disparities, public health research, or policy analysis.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly in scientific or technical writing.
- Experience creating data visualizations, charts, or tables.
- Attention to detail and ability to organize complex information.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a supervisor.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid remote internship. This internship is from May to August (with flexible start and end dates depending on your academic schedule) and will require approximately 20 hours per week. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution’s policies and guidelines.
