Diabetes Burden Update Project Summer 2024 Internship
Project Overview:
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is seeking a highly motivated graduate student to undertake a Diabetes Burden Update project for the Office of Health Promotion. This project involves utilizing data from the Illinois Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to update previous reports with new data. The intern will collaborate with a Chronic Disease Epidemiologist and the BRFSS Coordinator throughout the project, culminating in a presentation of findings to IDPH staff.
The intern will analyze data from the BRFSS to provide a comprehensive update on the diabetes burden in Illinois. This will involve interpreting descriptive statistics, identifying statistically significant differences, drawing meaningful conclusions, and creating visualizations such as charts and graphs to support the results. The final report will follow the format of previous reports and include any necessary updates.
Requirements:
1. Demonstrated proficiency in Biostatistics (A or B grade required).
2. Letter of Recommendation from a Biostatistics professor.
Schedule:
- Week 1: Project overview and expectations meeting.
- Week 2: Clarification and question session.
- Week 4: Submission of outline and additional resources, with feedback from IDPH.
- Week 6: Submission of rough draft, with feedback from IDPH.
- Week 8: Submission of updated draft, with feedback from IDPH.
- Week 10: Final report submission, presentation to IDPH staff. Additional meeting times available if needed.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program (e.g., Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Policy Analysis, etc.)
- Grade of A or B in graduate level biostatistics class
- Letter of recommendation from Biostatistics professor
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- This internship is remote, with an estimated 15 hours per week
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. This internship will be part-time for approximately 8 hours per week. This is a hybrid position with possible on-site commitments in Chicago. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines. Application deadline is April 5, 2024.
