Join our team in the Office of Health Improvement – Maternal and Child Health (MCH) division (previously the office of Women’s Health) at the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Over the course of this internship, the intern will gain extensive knowledge about the Illinois MCH Title V Action Plan and performance measure framework, as well as the application and report process, enabling them to assist on projects throughout their time with IDPH. You will also communicate with Title V staff, state, and community partners to assist with completion of tasks. This includes email communication as well as being present for planning and committee meetings, when applicable. The intern will gain skills in project planning and management for the implementation and tracking of statewide maternal child health priorities. In addition, they will gain insights into the various groups, departments, and staff roles and responsibilities that help shape, implement, and evaluate our MCH programs, resources, and supports.
Responsibilities:
- Provide planning and project management support to the Title V team, including the MCH Director and Title V Block Grant Coordinator.
- Assist in developing new and innovative methods to document and track measures within the Title V Action Plan.
- Update narrative and data one-pagers for current Title V IDPH programs, ensuring alignment with the MCH Title V Action Plan.
- Support the IDPH Title V team in contacting external partners to collect and track relevant data for ongoing Title V projects and programs.
- Assist with a variety of Title V projects across program and domain teams, as needed – this includes but is not limited to the creation of presentations, publications, and other program materials.
- Communicate with partners and stakeholders to gather information and support project goals.
- Assist in developing domain-specific Title V training materials and workshops.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the project scope and team objectives.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), School of Public Health (with a concentration in Maternal & Child Health, MPH).
- Firm interest and background in researching maternal health, health equity, and MCH policy.
- Ability to work remotely and maintain regular communication with the supervising team.
- Secure home internet access, a hotspot, or VPN.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of public health principles, with an interest in maternal and child health (MCH).
- Experience supporting project planning and management, coordination, and implementation efforts.
- Demonstrated skill in developing presentations and one-pagers, reports, training materials, and workshops.
- Ability to participate in and contribute to meetings, including planning and committee discussions.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging with internal staff, state agencies, and community partners.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint) or similar tools.
Duration and Compensation:
This internship is for a minimum of six months (with flexible start and end dates depending on your academic schedule) and will require approximately 16 hours per week.
This is an unpaid hybrid internship in Chicago, IL but academic credit may be available depending on your institution’s policies and guidelines – please check with your academic advisor.
