Location: Chicago, IL
The Public Policy Intern will play an important role in supporting the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) efforts to develop, track, and advance public health policy. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the policy-making process, including how public health issues are addressed through legislation, regulation, and advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. You will work closely with the Policy Team to monitor legislative and executive activity, participate in coalition building, and contribute to the development of research and communications materials that inform policy initiatives. This experience is ideal for students interested in understanding how policy impacts public health and learning how to influence change through evidence-based advocacy.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor and track federal, state, and local policy developments, including executive and legislative changes.
- Summarize news and analyze the potential impact of policy developments on IDPH’s work.
- Assist in coordinating and executing coalition meetings and stakeholder engagements.
- Develop research and communication materials to support new policy initiatives.
- Support efforts to pursue and implement policy changes aligned with IDPH goals.
- Provide general staff support and contribute to other projects as needed.
Requirements:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in public policy, political science, government, public health, or a related field.
- Strong interest in policy development, advocacy, and government processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to conduct research and synthesize complex information clearly.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable means of transportation to be onsite in the IDPH office in Chicago.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. This is an hybrid position in Chicago, Illinois for 10-20 hours a week. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines.
