Overview:
The Division of Governmental Affairs at the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is seeking an intern to assist with a variety of tasks focused on public health legislation and stakeholder engagement. Under the guidance of the Division Chief, the intern will play a key role in communicating with legislators, supporting leadership with committee reports, and aiding in the management of boards and administrative rules. Projects may evolve based on departmental needs, providing opportunities for a hands-on experience in public health policy and administration. This internship offers a unique opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and contribute to meaningful public health initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate with legislators and their offices regarding constituent inquiries via phone and email.
- Report on committee hearings and legislative actions to IDPH leadership.
- Attend legislator and stakeholder meetings to support relationship-building efforts.
- Assist in filing administrative rules and managing documentation related to rules and regulations.
- Sort and prepare files for storage and destruction.
- Review and analyze passed legislation, providing answers to inquiries from IDPH staff.
- Conduct audits of active boards and commissions, including tracking openings and appointments.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in Public Health, Government, Policy, Health Sciences, or a related field.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work approximately 10-20 hours a week
- Located within 1.5 hours of Springfield, Illinois to work onsite for 10 hours a week.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. This is a hybrid position in Springfield, Illinois for 10-20 hours a week. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines.
