With the "introduction" of a "Student" label to Urbana-Champaign, the following labels will not longer be printed:
- Graduate
- Undergraduate
- College of Law
- College of Medicine
- Veterinary Medicine
Any i-cards issued previously with these labels are still valid—as long as the cardholder is a current student and their i‑card is not expired. Students are not to exchange their unexpired i-cards for one with a "Student" label.
University ID card labels depict a person's role or affiliation to the University of Illinois System when they were printed, and they are never intended to guarantee a person's current, active status in the System. All university units that provide ID-based services rely on electronic verification of a cardholder's status and affiliation.
This move to one card label will help students to receive their i-cards more quickly; it will also keep unexpired i‑cards out of landfills, as they are used for their full allotted lifespan without the "need" to change printed labels. A single "Student" i‑card label has been in use for 20+ years already at the universities at Chicago and Springfield.
