Cost of Attendance is Estimated
You have likely already received your financial aid notification, or award letter, from financial aid. Within that notification is a section on the Cost of Attendance. Any amounts in this section are estimates based on criteria from your school.

Comparing & Lowering Costs
For example, room & board costs can be lowered if you choose options like having more roommates or different meal plans. However, it can also be significantly increased if you choose to live alone or want different living amenities. Comparing housing options can be a great way to cut overall costs of a college degree.
The costs of books and supplies can be lowered by buying used, renting, or borrowing from the library or friends. These small amounts can definitely add up.
