The Department of Justice (DOJ) published an updated final rule on April 24, 2024, to set forth web, digital, and mobile application accessibility requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This rule applies to state or local government entities, including public higher education institutions. It goes into effect on June 24, 2024, and the University of Illinois System will need to be compliant by June 24, 2026.
This is the first set of formal regulations the DOJ has issued under the ADA concerning web accessibility. The rule change is meant to help make sure people with disabilities have access to state and local governments’ services, programs, and activities available on websites and mobile apps. This rule will also provide state and local governments with more clarity about what they have to do to comply with the ADA. For the university, this applies to digital content used as course material, web content, and software applications.
A summary of the changes can be found in Fact Sheet: New Rule on the Accessibility of Web Content and Mobile Apps Provided by State and Local Governments.
