This announcement applies to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign only.
We understand that navigating the impact of new tariffs can be challenging. The Purchasing and Contract Management Office (PCMO) is committed to keeping you informed as we face tariff increases.
While we are navigating new market conditions, there are several factors all departments should be considering to limit the financial impact of your budgets. When making small purchases, departments are responsible for working with vendors to avoid fees. This may require rethinking typical purchasing methods. Consider the following:
- Find competitive quotes: Seek alternative options to minimize costs.
- Question fees: Verify the country of origin and confirm if tariffs apply.
- Ask for alternatives: Request substitutes to avoid fees.
- Expand vendor options: Increase competition to find better pricing.
- Review specifications: Adjust order requirements to minimize costs.
Vendors must clearly explain any fees. If a tariff is unavoidable (e.g., sole source), departments must document all efforts to avoid fees and include this with their requisition. The PCMO will review these fees and may return requisitions lacking proper documentation.
