This communication is a follow-up to the message sent on 2/4/25 regarding New Tariffs and Impacts on Procurement.
Effective March 4, 2025, there is a 25% duty rate on imports from Canada and Mexico, and the recent China tariff of 10% has been increased to 20%.
The new tariffs will likely also have significant impacts on purchases that are not being made directly from Canada, Mexico, and China. For United States-based vendors that include those countries in their supply chains, it is unknown to what extent the vendors will increase pricing to address the additional tariffs they are needing to pay.
Tariffs and Purchase Requisitions:
Tariffs and any additional fees are paid to the University’s customs broker at the time of custom clearance. Departments do NOT need to add an additional line item to the requisition for tariffs or custom fees.
The imposed tariffs are still very fluid. It is important to consider alternative products to avoid increased costs to the University.
We will keep you up to date as changes occur, as it is anticipated additional impacts may be forthcoming.
