Does your unit have gift (fund type 4M) or endowment income (fund type 4J) funds? If so, keep the following points in mind:
- Many times, the default program code and NACUBO function assigned to your gift or endowment income fund will coincide with the fund’s assigned donor intent restrictions. For example, a gift fund restricted for scholarships would typically have the generic program code of 191787 (Scholarships) assigned as the default program code within Banner page FZMFUND. This ensures that the fund’s scholarship expenses are properly classified for financial reporting purposes.
- However, this is not always the case, as program codes are designed to reflect the nature of the expenses posting to the fund (and not necessarily the fund’s donor intent restrictions). For example, it would be reasonable and allowable for an unrestricted gift fund to use a generic program code of 191100 (Research) if the majority of the expenses posting to that fund are for research. Even though the fund is unrestricted, the NACUBO function and program code used with the fund should accurately reflect the primary nature of the fund’s expenses to ensure proper financial reporting.
