Question: What is GDPR, and what does it mean for me?
GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. It was established by the European Union (EU) in 2018 to protect the data privacy and security of people in the European Economic Area (EEA).
This regulation prompted UIF to exclude constituents who have any active address (except “Relative”) in TED within the EEA from almost all communications. Individuals matching this criteria are given a solicit (opt-out) code, NX525, that removes them from all mass mailings. In order to have that code removed, the individual has to “Opt-In” by submitting this form: https://uif.org.uk/stay-in-touch, found on the UIF UK website.
When the individual submits the form, it is sent to AIMS. The form states their name, email, whether or not they attended UI, any additional degree and contact information they provide, and then their yes/no response to “I wish to receive communications, including electronic marketing messages (e.g. email or SMS), from the UI Entities.”
AIMS then end dates the GDPR Solicit code, and adds the GDPR Mail Preference (opt-in) to the constituent’s Communications tab under Preferences. This allows the individual to receive mass communications as well as be able to access IlliniLink and Magnet.
