1. Can you provide us with some information about your background? Your education and career?
I grew up outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania. I received my degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. My first position after graduation was in Illinois to work in community mental health on the south side of Chicago. It was during this time that I developed a deep interest in nonprofits and especially, helping new nonprofits get off the ground. I joined the faculty at the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois Chicago in 1980. I met and married the love of my life, Donald Brieland, while in this position. I was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh to continue my career. In 2002, I was recruited to be the next Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I retired from that position in 2017. Between my husband and I, we had 50 years of experience at the University of Illinois.
2. Can you tell us more about how you have stayed connected to the University of Illinois since your time as a dean and professor?
I continue to stay connected through OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) by taking classes, attending lectures, and participating in study groups. I am a Krannert Center regular and give to Illinois Public Media (also known as WILL). My beloved poodle was cared for by the Vet Med Oncology service. I support the School of Social Work’s Community Learning Lab that partners with organizations in our local community and offers students experiential learning opportunities. I have been invited back as a guest lecturer since retiring.
3. Giving to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is clearly important to you. Can you explain what compelled you to give and keep giving? What do you hope your philanthropy accomplishes for the university?
I was raised to think about the importance of philanthropy. The many years my husband and I spent at the University of Illinois gave us so much. We started giving while on the faculty of the Jane Addams College of Social Work. We made a legacy commitment to the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I have a unique relationship with the School, so I wanted to find creative ways to support it. There is a lecture series that was created in honor and memory of my husband, a scholarship created for BSW transfer students, and a commitment to the Community Learning Lab. I hope that this leads to a positive and lasting impact on social needs in our community.
4. What advice can you share about how to make a lasting impact at the University of Illinois?
I have always believed in the importance of giving back and investing in organizations and causes that are most meaningful to me. Listen to university experts on their needs. For instance, emergency support during COVID was critical. After making a gift, ask for follow-up so you can see the impact and how your investment makes a difference. For me, I always enjoy meeting scholarship recipients and learning more about their education and career paths.
5. What is your favorite University of Illinois memory?
When I started as Dean of the School of Social Work in 2002, there had been promises to move the school to an improved, larger space. I vowed that this would happen during my time as Dean. Moving into our building on Nevada was my favorite memory. Today, the School continues to outgrow this new space, and I look forward to witnessing their continued growth and impact.
