As a result of several recent legislative changes, the University of Illinois System has made some updates to the following leave benefits: Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), University Family Medical Leave (UFML) to care for a same-sex domestic partner or civil union partner, and Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Leave (VESSA). A summary of these changes is detailed below.
FMLA and UFML
- An employee who has been employed by the University for at least 12 months and who has worked at least 1,000 hours (decreased from 1,250 hours) in the previous 12-month period is eligible.
VESSA
- Addition and definition of “gender violence” and “any other crime of violence” to the list of applicable offenses.
- The changes provide clarity on the application and certification process, including that the employee can choose which documentation type to submit.
Questions regarding these leave benefits may be directed to your university or system human resource office.
